CIM and Bournemouth University host event on combatting cancel culture

By Bryndley Walker, PR Executive, CIM

    • BU ICE Symposium event to focus on how marketers can prepare to face the threat of cancel culture.
    • Amanda Evans and Kristian Sturt confirmed as speakers at annual event.

Final year BA (Hons) Marketing Communications students from Bournemouth University (BU), in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), will host the prestigious BU ICE Symposium, formally known as the Mike Warne event, on Wednesday 3 May.

The 16th annual event entitled, ‘Combating Cancel Culture’, will see a host of leading names from the world of marketing share their vision of the industry's future.

Confirmed speakers include Amanda Evans, group editorial director at Jargon PR and Kristian Sturt, director of Colossal Influence. The speakers will lead discussions around cancel culture and why they believe preparation is key to protecting brands and organisations when a crisis hits. CIM’s recent Impact of Marketing report identified that cancel culture is an area of particular concern for young people with 50 per cent of 18-24 year olds worried about their organisation being a victim of cancel culture.

Tyler Lawrence, vice chair – education for CIM’s South West regional board said: “CIM and Bournemouth University students have designed the evening in a way that will allow us to understand the impact of cancel culture and the threat it could pose to marketers if they are not properly prepared.

“There is a growing concern among marketers about being ‘cancelled’ and the repercussions this could have for the brands they work for. However, understanding the risks of cancel culture and being prepared for any potential mis-steps are now key parts of a marketer's armoury, and I look forward to the panel discussing what brands can do to protect their image.”

The BU ICE Symposium builds on the work of the Mike Warne event which became a renowned milestone in CIM’s event calendar, honouring the memory of the late Mike Warne, a CIM regional director who was a strong advocate for building relationships between aspiring marketing students and CIM. For the last 15 years, the event has celebrated innovation in marketing, addressing the key, topical issues within the industry and the latest iteration of the event, the BU ICE Symposium will continue this important work.

As well as hosting the BU ICE Symposium, Bournemouth University is a Strategic Partner of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, which sees CIM collaborate closely with Bournemouth University to raise standards in studying and enhance student career prospects by ensuring graduates leave with the skills employers are looking for.

Maggie Jones, director of qualifications and partnerships at CIM said: “The accredited degree  programme provides synergy between CIM and Bournemouth University, while adding value to the qualifications students receive.”

“The CIM brand and qualifications are globally respected and our partnership programme a clear advantage for qualification providers, ensuring students have access to the training they need to achieve their professional goals.”

The BU ICE Symposium takes place at The Fusion Building on Bournemouth University’s Talbot Campus on Wednesday 3 May from 6pm-8pm. CIM is proud to offer free tickets for students. Please call 01628 427 340 to book tickets. All other tickets are priced £15-£20.
